At the kick-off meeting of the international research network “Another Roadmap” hosted by the Institute for Art Education (IAE) in Zürich in October 2011, participants discussed different approaches researching the UNESCO Roadmap for Arts Education and related neo-liberal policy discourses in arts and culture globally.

Starting with a review what has been done so far, working structures and problems were identified. Three guiding fields of research were outlined for the planned international research project:

  • Critically analysing the UNESCO Roadmap (Lisbon 2006) and Seoul Agenda (Seoul 2010) with a special focus on urgent questions which become apparent in the respective local context, including local/regional neo-liberal discourse of cultural policies, such as the discourse around “creativity”, “creative industries”, “Creative Turns” or “Educational Turns”;
  • Plotting alternatives and developing other paradigms, researching examples of radical arts education, inquire into “studies of implementation”; and
  • Researching histories of Arts Education in the context of a continuing hegemony of a colonial westernised education; considering the migration of concepts, forms and discourses.

As a result of the meeting, an initial project description was drafted and agreed upon, which was translated to Spanish. A Wiki and a Blog of Another Roadmap were created as online platforms facilitating the exchange of information and serving as a platform for discussion between the international research groups (hosted by the Zürich University of the Arts).
